According to the On-line Dictionary, the definition of hoard is: ‘A hidden fund or supply stored for future use.’ Although lately I am noticing that some people who are inquiring about storage for their stuff are quick to identify themselves as hoarders.

After listening to the customer as to what will be stored, it is plain to see that the word ‘hoard’ does not enter the picture. What I do see is that years have gone by, and many people have acquired stuff from their parents, grandparents, children and even their own stuff! How ‘bout that sporting equipment, those photo albums, the family videos or those hardback books that you dare not get rid of, but give the look of clutter? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just find a place to store your stuff?

Consider Bolsa Chica Self Storage a place to store your stuff! Just give us a call at (714) 373-0062 or stop in during office hours for a quick tour of the facility. Our office hours are Monday through Saturday, 9AM-6PM; Sunday, 10AM-3PM.

During your spring cleaning, here’s our list of boxes to help you get the job done!

File boxes can be used to store last year’s income tax files, bank statements, bill statements and receipts. Both standard (8-1/2 x 11) and legal (8-1/2 x 14) size documents nicely fit our file boxes. Each box comes with a lid.

Small boxes can be used to store hardback & paperback books. Today people use their Kindles but may not be ready to give up those treasured books. Small boxes are ideal for storing a variety of books.

Medium boxes can be used for storing small kitchen appliances. So, during spring cleaning, go through your kitchen and look for appliances that are taking up too much space and you haven’t used lately. Crock pots, food processors and bread makers are just a few small appliances that come to mind.

Large boxes can be used for lamps. Since lamps tend to be oblong, a large box works well for that special lamp that you are not ready to get rid of, but at the same time, may be purchasing…say, a new laser cut lamp.

Extra large boxes can be used for blankets & comforters. These boxes are certainly big enough for putting away those winter bulky items which will be required again during the cold season.

Dishpack boxes are double-walled, hence, protecting breakable items. This year you may want to try something new and different: like purchasing a new dish set! You can store your original dish set, and rotate them according to the season. Changing patterns and colors keeps us from getting bored with the same old things.

Mirror boxes come in three different sizes – small, medium and large; and the boxes can also be used for storing artwork and plasma TV’s. Because our mirror boxes are four inches deep, they can be placed underneath a bed. In some cases, two items can be placed in one mirror box.

Wardrobe boxes come in two sizes – small and regular size. This is a good time of year to organize your spring/summer wardrobe. You can put away heavy coats, parkas and jackets that are taking up too much closet space and won’t be needed until later on in the year. Besides that, wardrobe boxes can be used for storing extra clothes at Bolsa Chica Self Storage.

It is no surprise that other storage facilities require their customers to buy into their built-in storage insurance, and charge customers extra for it.

You have three choices of insurance options at Bolsa Chica Self Storage:

1) Deans & Homer Self-Storage Insurance

2) From Your Own Insurance Agent

3) Be “Self-Insured”

More often than not, all new customers initial & sign the “Addendum to Lease or Rental Agreement” and choose and initial to “Be Self-Insured.”

We also suggest checking with their Homeowner’s Insurance Company to see if they are covered for personal and business items that are in storage.

Our new customers find out they are automatically covered through their Homeowner’s Insurance Policy and are very pleased that they don’t have to pay extra for self-storage insurance.

I have found that, by and large, a 10 x 10 is one of the most popular, if not popular, storage unit size in this business.

Our office receives inquiry after inquiry with a 10 x 10’s availability & pricing. The first thing that we do is try to get an idea as to what is being stored. We listen carefully and then we automatically direct them to an 8 x 10, a 7 x 10 or even a 6 x 10 in size. We then proceed to explain that our units are a minimum of 9 feet from floor-to-ceiling and they could stack their personal or business items quite high. Some of them even sound surprised that we give them several different sizes and options, and direct them to a smaller unit than they originally anticipated. And, if for some reason any of these sizes are too small to accommodate them, then we revert back to a 10 x 10. But, more often than not, we have found that something smaller than a 10 x 10 is what is needed; and they have a lowered price, too!

In the self-storage business, we believe it is important to give the customer options because we practice integrity by telling the truth, we want to keep our customers happy and because customer service is our business anyway.

Since I make my rounds at the facility, I’ve noticed that many of our customers are visiting their storage units to get their harvest decorations. In the last few weeks, I’ve seen: scarecrows, pumpkins, hay, jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, witches, skeletons, and numerous garden signs being dragged out of storage.

It never occurred to me that some people use self-storage to store holiday decorations, but many of them actually do! And, I just know that as soon as Halloween and Thanksgiving are over, these decorations will go back to storage, and, just like that, out comes their Christmas decorations.

On one of my rounds, I conversed with a customer who has sky-high boxes of Halloween decorations and costumes. She told me that she has a Halloween bash every year and was looking forward to this year’s major extravaganza.

I am beginning to understand that our customers are quite creative when it comes to using their storage; and, that self-storage goes beyond a job transfer or a family relocation.

These days the self-storage industry gets a bad rap due to actual break-in’s.

In 2009, tennis legend Pete Sampras found out the hard way that it does matter who you do business with and self-storage is no exception. Sampras rented storage from a facility in Los Angeles and was burglarized. Sadly, many of his valuable tournament trophies were ripped off. Like others, Sampras believed that his cherished items were safe and secure.

We’ve checked out other storage facilities (part of the job) and many of them fail the grade when it comes to surveillance. We take surveillance very seriously and want everyone to know that we care about them (we go out of our way) and their stuff (by having a sophisticated surveillance system).

You may ask just what comprises a sophisticated surveillance system at Bolsa Chica Self Storage? And, we say, “a state-of-the-art security system that includes: 155 cameras; all units that are individually alarmed with computerized gate access and private entry codes.”

We believe that having a sophisticated surveillance system is just one of the many things that sets us apart from the rest in the self-storage industry.

These days it’s very easy to check out a self-storage facility and see how well it fares with respect to customer service. All you need is a few minutes, a computer and the internet.

If it was a good experience, a customer may ‘refer a friend’. However, if it was a horrible experience, not only will the customer tell a friend about the negative experience, he may actually blog about it, and will surely never come back to that particular self-storage facility.

When a customer steps into our office or makes that call to us, we make sure that we go out of our way because they are important to us! With that said, we work at establishing a positive connection with every single customer.

Not only will customers ‘refer a friend’ and come back when they need to, but they just might give us favorable feedback on the internet.
